A question I am often asked is: Should I get a freshwater or saltwater aquarium?
This is a great question as it will always determine what kinds of fish you can get. You can’t change your mind later on.

When people pick out the kind of aquarium they are going to buy, they really do put a lot of thought into it. From what it is made out of to the size and form of the aquarium. Another concerns they are probably going to have is dealing with the price. In most situations, the freshwater aquariums are the favorite pick over saltwater aquariums because they cost quite a bit less.

Besides freshwater aquariums being less costly than saltwater tanks, they are also  really easy to setup and maintain. This is because saltwater tanks require a lot of extra things in order to use them. Freshwater tanks don’t need as much extra equipment making them a lot less. For example, saltwater fish need corals in the tanks, which add to the price of the aquariums. Additionally, saltwater aquariums require a lot more time time when changing the water. Since the level of salt in the water needs to be constantly monitored and maintained, this puts added responsibility on the person. In the case of freshwater tanks, there is no real need to continually monitor the levels of salt in the water.

There are a whole lot more options when it comes to saltwater fish in regards to choices. If you think about it then ocean is immense and full of so many different types of wonderful fish. And many will work in your saltwater tank. Your local pet store can help you with all the options. Although you might need to call around as many places deal in freshwater fish.  The fish that are available in saltwater are way more exotic, compared to those found in freshwater aquariums. Although there are many advantages to a saltwater aquarium they can only support saltwater fish, which are definitely way more expensive than freshwater fish.

Freshwater aquariums will need some kind of filter either a mixture of water or air pumps along with filtration substances like sponges, carbon or gravel. For the saltwater aquariums special filters called foam fractionators will be  needed. These filters are in charge of removing waste products that can’t be removed using just a standard filter. The filters will maintain proper balance in the aquarium since saltwater fish are far more delicate to waste than freshwater fish.  Saltwater tanks also need another expensive kind of filtration known as live rock.
